One of the most successful K9 dogs in the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has retired. Officials say “Miley” retired last Wednesday after his handler Eric Lopez was promoted to detective. The two have been together for five years as part of the department’s narcotics interdiction team. From June of 2016 to June of 2017, YCSO’s four person K9 team seized 40 pounds of meth, 226 pounds of marijuana, over 12 pounds of cocaine and nearly three pounds of heroin. Lopez and “Miley” found 25 pounds of meth during that stretch. The pair were also involved in the pursuit and search of a suspect near Bearizona earlier this year. Per department rules, Lopez had to buy “Miley” to keep him so YCSO charged him a dollar. “Miley” will now live life peacefully with Lopez and won’t have to use his nose and instincts to find drugs again.
