A Peeples Valley woman is in jail after she turned herself in to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, saying she fatally shot her husband. Officials say 57-year-old Katherine Herbert told deputies she shot 58-year-old James Herbert back on Saturday after he returned from work. Katherine told authorities she was afraid she was going to be assaulted as the two argued, so she got a loaded shotgun from the bedroom, aimed it at him and told him to stop. She says he went into the bedroom to get a handgun and saw him loading it. When he looked up, she thought he raised the gun, so she shot him in the head. She then left the house to drive to Snowflake, where she stopped to pray at an area church. Katherine then came back to the home the next morning to find the body as she left it. Then on Tuesday, she talked to her daughter and then turned herself over to deputies. Authorities went to the home and found the James’ body and the handgun. She has been booked on a charge of first degree murder and remains in the Camp Verde Detention Center.
