There will be a new president of the Navajo Nation as current vice president Jonathan Nez won Tuesday’s tribal presidential primary, which had 18 candidates running. Nez received more than 14-thousand votes. Former president Joe Shirley Junior came in a distant second. Current Navajo Nation president Russell Begaye finished in fifth. The top two winners will be on the ballot for the November general election. Nez’s platform included improving the health of the Navajo people.
