The new superintendent of the Flagstaff Unified School District won’t be current interim superintendent Dave Dirksen. The finalists for the position are Penny Hargrove, current school superintendent in Hiawatha, Kansas and Michael Penca, who is the interim superintendent in Iowa. Dirksen took over for Barbara Hickman nearly two years ago after she left for a job in Colorado. At the time, Dirksen was the head football coach at Flagstaff High School. Dirksen recently told the school board he didn’t want to be considered for the permanent role. A decision on a new FUSD superintendent is expected to be made as soon as March. There’s no word on whether or not Dirksen will return to coaching.
