The Navajo Nation Council has approved a lease extension that will allow the Navajo Generating Station near Page to keep operating through December of 2019. The council voted 18-4 in favor of the extension after about eight hours of debate. The move will keep around 700 people employed at the plant and the coal mine near Kayenta for the time being. U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is happy about the decision by the tribe to keep the plant open. The plant’s owners said earlier this year that if they didn’t get the extension, then the plant would have closed this year. NGS is owned by three Arizona utilities, one in Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. The tribe hopes to keep the plant open at least through 2030, but has yet to find a buyer for the facility.
