The Navajo Nation is suing Wells Fargo for that they are calling unlawful banking practices against tribal members. Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye says he has directed tribal lawyers to seek restitution, damages and civil penalties after they claim Wells Fargo broke federal, state and tribal law. The tribe claims bank employees at branches across the reservation, routinely misled customers into opening unnecessary accounts and obtained debit and credit cards without customers’ consent. Begaye says “Wells Fargo must be held accountable for its unfair and unlawful practices directed to Navajo people.” The tribe also claim tribal elders were purposely confused and deceived into purchasing products to help employees meet banking quotas. The suit was filed in a New Mexico court Tuesday morning.
