Mingus Union High School has decided to change their ID card program. Questions surrounding the program surfaced recently after the ACLU said students at the school, who have fallen behind in class, had to openly wear red ID badges indicating their status. The badges distinguished them from other students who wear grey badges and the ACLU says it was humiliating for the students. The school district said the red cards prevented juniors who don’t have enough credits for their grade level from leaving campus for lunch and it wasn’t about punishing the students for underperforming. The school released a statement Wednesday saying “all students will now have the same color student ID’s, which is red for the school’s colors.” They say all students must wear their ID’s at all times on campus. Those meeting requirements to leave campus for lunch will now receive an off campus lunch pass. The pass will need to be shown when leaving for lunch.
