Two-Vehicle Accident Involving A Wrong Way Driver Closes Eastbound I-40 Early Thursday Morning

Eastbound Interstate-40 was closed early Thursday morning after a crash involving a wrong way driver at the I-40 bridge over I-17 in Flagstaff. DPS says the accident took place at around 3:20 a.m. Authorities say a SUV was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the Butler Road Exit. Shortly after the initial call, the wrong way driver crashed head-on with a semi-truck traveling eastbound near the I-17/I-40 transition. The driver of the SUV has been identified as 48-year-old Everytt Begay from Crownpoint, New Mexico. He was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center with minor injuries. Begay was treated and released into custody. He has been booked into the Coconino County Jail on charges of aggravated DUI and endangerment.
