Two stranded hikers were rescued by Coconino County Search and Rescue teams Monday in Sycamore Canyon. The adult male and female hikers had started at the Sycamore Falls trailhead parking area and hiked east along the rim before traveling off trail down into Sycamore Canyon. When they tried to return to the trailhead, they couldn’t find the route they had taken and went west below the rim before getting to a point where they couldn’t travel further due to the terrain. Once they became stranded, they contacted 911 to request assistance. A deputy sheriff responded from the Williams area and was able to locate them and communicate to determine that search and rescue would be needed to assist them out of the canyon. Search and rescue teams responded and conducted a technical rope rescue operation to raise the hikers out of the canyon and escort them back to the trail head. The rescue was completed at about midnight. The hikers were uninjured.
