Today Is National Navajo Code Talkers Day

Today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day. In the proclamation written by President Ronald Reagan, he wanted today to be a “day dedicated to all members of the Navajo Nation and to all Native Americans who gave their special talents and their lives so that others might live.” In World War Two, code talkers played a valuable role to send messages and code to allied forces by using their native language. It was a code the Germans and Japanese couldn’t break. The last of the original code talkers, Chester Nez, died in 2014. However of the 421 members of the group, there are five Marines still alive. President Reagan made the today’s proclamation back in 1982.
