The man who was involved in an officer-involved shooting in Sedona Monday has been identified. Police say the shooting happened at around 1:30 p.m. in the 50 block of Newcastle Lane. Authorities say before the shooting they received a report of a man dressed in camouflage and was holding a machete, trying to get into a home and possibly cutting himself. The man was a 41-year-old Jonathan David Messare. Soon after officers arrived at the scene and contacted Messare, they opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hurt in the exchange. Messare had a criminal history in Oregon. Back in March of last year, Messare was arrested after he threw a hatchet and a knife and charged at officers while naked near a school. The “Sedona Red Rock News” reports he had a hearing in October that he failed to appear for. He moved to Sedona where he had a couple brushes with law enforcement. Messare served in the U.S. Army with at least one tour in Iraq, according to the paper. The incident remains under investigation.
