The Weatherford Hotel’s 2022 Great Pine Cone Drop has been cancelled due to the rising spread of the Omicron variant of the COVID virus, as well as staffing shortages caused by the virus’ surge. The drops set for noon, 10 p.m. and midnight will not take place. Hotel officials said in a release “we are completely devastated to be putting this event on pause as our staff and management team have been looking forward to hosting the event and ringing in 2022 together.” However, they say “it is necessary to keep the community of Flagstaff, all visitors, and our hotel staff’s health and safety a top priority.” They say that with over ten-thousand people that historically attend the Pine Cone Drop, it would be unsafe to hold the event under the current COVID climate. Even though the Pine Cone Drop has been called off, the VIP Golden Ticket Event will still take place, with additional COVID protocols and reduced capacity limits to ensure the safety of the hotel guests. To go with the decision by the Weatherford, the city of Flagstaff has also canceled this year’s fireworks show.
