The Hashknife Pony Express Ready To Ride February 1st

February 1st marks the return of the Hashknife Pony Express, a 64-year-old tradition of carrying the mail from Holbrook to Scottsdale via horse. Mark Reynolds, a captain with the group for 24 years, says this year they have 25 riders that hand off the mail, relay style. He says “when I first started riding we rode five miles at a time.” Reynolds adds, “now it’s down to a mile for each rider because it’s easier on them, and the horse.” The group carries seven-to-nine thousand pieces of mail from Holbrook, through Pine, Heber-Overgaard, Payson, Fountain Hills and finally delivers it in Scottsdale February 5th. Reynolds says if you’d like to mail something with their special postmark, you can send one or more letters to Holbrook. Address it to “Postmaster,” write “Via Pony Express” in the lower left hand corner and mail it to P.O. Box 118, Holbrook, Arizona, 86025.
