The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board spent nearly seven hours Tuesday night, trying to figure out a plan to not only return kids to the classroom, but to resume sports. The board heard from members of the district and read 90 minutes worth of public comment. Members decided to scrap the idea of the hybrid model of returning kids to in-person learning. The hybrid model was to have kids go back to school two days out of the week, with the rest of the time conducting online classes at home. The board agreed to come up with a plan to start returning kids back to school as a whole next quarter, when COVID-19 benchmarks give them green light to do so. The re-entry would start with grades kindergarten through second grade and then gradually return kids to class from there. As for athletics, the board waited until just after midnight to decide to have non-contact sports return to practice and competition, while football and volleyball can return to practice. Wednesday morning, football and volleyball were cleared for practice and games. The district is working on plans for 10-percent capacity for fans. As of now, next Friday’s two football games are on at Coconino High School.
