The Flagstaff City Council discussed its transportation tax fund as it relates to essential projects and flexible projects during their council retreat on Thursday. Regarding essential projects, the council mentioned the Lone Tree railroad overpass project, which will provide a separated crossing of railroad tracks that will connect Butler Avenue to Route 66. This project was approved by citizens in 2018. They also covered a project to widen Butler Avenue which is currently in a robust public outreach and engagement process. The council also discussed a roundabout being added to the intersection of Lockett Road and 4th Street in the northeast section of Sunnyside. This coordination effort is in a design process with the Arizona Department of Transportation and is intended to provide better circulation. Additionally, the council discussed a solution to Flagstaff’s street lighting that will balance Dark Sky’s safety and maintenance as well as its costs. Regarding projects with more flexibility, the council touched on upgrading Lone Tree Road from the easterly edge of Northern Arizona University down to John Wesley Powell Boulevard. The council also discussed enhancing Woodlands Village Boulevard, though this project will be unable to proceed without more information from ADOT.
