The Flagstaff City Council will discuss police funding and operations in a special meeting called by Mayor Paul Deasy Monday evening. With an increase in awareness of controversial police tactics, the council has worked since last summer to examine police practices and find ways to improve them. Part of the discussion will look at an alternative response model, which would call on behavioral health professionals and others with specialized training to respond to non-violent police situations and get people involved in such situations the help they need. The special meeting will begin at 5 p.m. and can be streamed at flagstaff.az.gov.
