The Coconino Panthers have made it into the 4A football state playoffs. The AIA announced the brackets Saturday morning. The Panthers are seeded 13th and will travel to Glendale to battle the fourth-seeded Glendale Cardinals Friday night. Coconino finished the regular season with a 5-3 record, after having two of their first three games canceled due to COVID positive testing with the team. The Panthers finished their season this past Friday, beating rival Flagstaff 26-7. The win was their fifth straight over the Eagles. Coconino is led by junior running back Cooper French, who rushed for over 13-hundred yards and had 16 touchdowns on the season. The Cardinals are a balanced team. Senior running back Keyon Walker has rushed for over a thousand yards and has rushed for 13 touchdowns. Sophomore Zecheriah Ownes has had a great season for Glendale. He’s thrown for over 15-hundred yards with 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The Cardinals have won nine straight games after an opening season loss to Prescott, 27-13. One of those nine wins came against fifth-seeded Lake Havasu. They beat the Knights 58-28 at home. Coconino has played Glendale four times, with the Panthers winning three of the four games.
