The Coconino National Forest has announced two areas where firewood is available for free. The first area is A-1, which is located off Interstate 40 West and can be accessed by taking the A-1 Mountain exit. Follow the road for a half-mile, then turn left onto Forest Road 518, then take a slight right onto Forest Road 519. The second area is off Highway 180 about 18 miles northwest of Flagstaff. You’ll turn right onto Forest Road 151 then follow it for about a mile and a half then turn left onto Forest Road 9218 and follow it for a half-mile. There are about 20 truck loads of wood located off Highway 180 and 15 large slash piles in the A-1 area. Only dead and down Ponderosa Pine may be collected from the free use areas. You’ll need a free use permit to collect wood. You can get a permit by visiting the Coconino National Forest’s Flagstaff Ranger District Office, or the forest’s Supervisor’s Office.
