Steven Jones Sentenced To Six Years In Prison In Connection With A Fatal Shooting At NAU In 2015

NAU shooter Steven Jones was sentenced to six years in prison today in connection with the fatal shooting of Colin Brough. Judge Dan Slayton made the announcement in a Coconino County Courtroom. Jones was also sentenced to five years for each count of aggravated assault in the shootings of Nick Piring, Kyle Zientek and Nick Prato in a parking lot of north campus at NAU in October of 2015. The sentences will run concurrent. Before he was sentenced, Jones addressed the court saying, “if it were possible, in a heartbeat I would trade places with Colin Brough.” He added “if he could be home with his family and I could be dead, I would do that.” The sentencing brings an end to the case that lasted four years. The process went through a hung jury and then Jones’ plea deal just before a retrial was set to begin last month.
