Arizona State Senator Kelly Townsend has announced she is running against State Senator Wendy Rogers for the State Senate seat in Legislative District Seven. District Seven spans hundreds of miles after redistricting. The district includes areas of Flagstaff south of Interstate 40, but includes NAU and the south-side neighborhood. The district also includes Williams, most of the White Mountain communities, Payson, Globe, and Apache Junction. Back in January, Townsend claimed she was running for a U.S. House seat, but announced she was backing out of the congressional race on Friday. Rogers was censured by the state Senate recently for disparaging comments made at a conference, which included calling for the building of gallows to kill political opponents. Rogers spoke at the hearing and didn’t make amends for her comments. Townsend did not vote, but was in favor of Rogers’ censure. Townsend said Tuesday “Rogers has a Constitutional right to hang out with white supremacists.” She adds, “but good and decent people are also free to find it repulsive and un-American.”
