SRP Plans To Close The Coronado Generating Station Near St. Johns In 2032

Salt River Project has announced a plan to slowly close the Coronado Generating Station near St. Johns in eastern Arizona. SRP announced its “CGS Operation Plan” earlier this week, that will curtail operation of both units at the plant until it closes in 2032. As of 2017, St. Johns is home to just over 35-hundred residents, where the plant is a major employer in the community. CGS is the latest in a line of coal-fired plant closures in Arizona. Navajo Generating Station near Page closed down late last year and PacifiCorp announced Monday they will close one of the three remaining units at the Cholla Power Plant in Joseph City later this year. Energy companies are moving away from coal-fired plants in favor or other sources of power, such as natural gas.
