Flood mitigation has begun in some of the flooded areas from last Summer’s Tunnel and Pipeline fires in the Schultz Pipeline burn area. Work got underway recently in Wuptaki Trails, which was one of the hardest hit neighborhoods by both fires and subsequent flooding. Crews are digging out two deep and wide trenches in a triangle to help future water flows drain into the new trenches and not through private property and homes. Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and Small Business Administrator Isabella Guzman were in Flagstaff, to meet with county officials and tour the Wuptaki Trails area. Kelly says, “we have to work on this to figure out a path forward to get the resources on fire prevention and fire mitigation, and flood mitigation, parts of this.” Kelly says there’s still work to be done on not only current mitigation projects, but future projects and prevention going forward.
