LD6 Representative Walt Blackman has introduced a bill that would apply early release credits to non-violent inmates. His legislation would be for people in prison for drug-related offenses and says it would reduce eligible inmate sentences by 15-percent as they move into community supervision following successful drug treatment. Blackman says the program “isn’t going to be one of those programs where they can just take a badminton class. They’re going to have to work toward their way out, that’s why it’s called earned release credit.” The bill is getting bipartisan support from House Democrat Diego Rodriguez, who is also sponsoring a sentence reduction bill.
