The Mingus Marauders will reportedly have a new football coach next season. The “Verde News” reports the Mingus Union District chose not to renew the contract of Robert Ortiz after the Marauders went 0-10 this season. In his first season coaching at Mingus in 2018, the Marauders went 9-3 and made it into the 4A State Playoffs. The 2009 Mingus alum was the Grand Canyon Region Coach of the Year as well in 2018. This year the Marauders had to rebuild after losing a lot of players off the 2018 team to graduation, and it didn’t go well. He was ejected from the Marauders October 8th game against Mohave after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Mingus went on to lose the game to the Thunderbirds. Region champion Coconino beat Mingus, 52-14 and Flagstaff beat the Marauders, 45-2, both in Cottonwood. A search for a new football coach is expected to begin soon.
