With nearly two weeks before the start of the high school football season, Mingus Union High School head football coach Doug Provenzano has reportedly resigned. The “Verde Valley Independent” talked to Provenzano who cited missed family time as the reason he is leaving the program. The coach lived in west Phoenix and drove to Cottonwood daily to teach and coach the Marauders. He told the paper he was missing too many moments with his daughter and family and realized recently she was getting older and didn’t want to miss any more time with her. Provenzano was hired in the spring of 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic. The school’s athletic director Yancy DeVore told the “Independent” the current coaching staff will guide the team for the time being, however the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. The Marauders open the season Friday, September 3rd on the road against Thunderbird.
