Questions remain regarding the death of an inmate in the Coconino County Jail earlier this year. Officers conducted a welfare check back in January and found 20-year-old Kyle Martinson unresponsive in the early morning hours. According to sheriff’s officials, detention officers began giving him life-saving measures, including CPR until paramedics arrived. Martinson was pronounced dead minutes later. In a jailhouse video obtained by the “Arizona Daily Sun,” Martinson was heard coughing and calling for help from his cell as detention officers stand in the hallway nearby. According to the paper, one officer told Martinson “there’s nothing wrong with you. Drink some water.” According to the medical examiner’s office, Martinson died of pneumonia, which was caused by strep throat. The report says a gallon and a half of liquid was found in his lungs.
