Tis the season for prescribed burns in Northern Arizona, with a host of them tentatively set for this week around Flagstaff. Burns are planned for Observatory Mesa, Rogers Lake, the U.S. Naval Observatory, Fort Tuthill County Park and private lands in Coconino County. Prescribed burns help to restore forests to healthier conditions and improve the safety of the communities around them. Frequent, low-intensity fire removes accumulated smaller fuels and recycles nutrients in the soils to promote healthy vegetation and wildlife habitat. Burns will be done on days when the weather is favorable and winds can keep smoke out of large population areas.
