Prescribed Burns On The Coconino National Forest Resume This Week

The Coconino National Forest resumed prescribed burns over the weekend. Crews began to burn around a thousand acres near Stoneman Lake. The burn will reduce hazardous fuels around the Stoneman Lake community and will protect the Apache Maid Cabin. This is a multi-day burn that is expected to take about ten days to complete. Light to moderate smoke is expected. Crews will burn just over six-thousand acres starting Monday on the Horseshoe Project. The area is located eight-and-a-half miles north of Bellemont. The burn will last four days. Smoke will impact Highway 180 near the Arizona Nordic Village and Kendrick Park. The Lava River Cave will be closed during the burn. Removing hazardous fuels during times of opportune weather, when winds are moderate, temperatures are lower and humidity is higher, helps prevent high-intensity and catastrophic wildfire during summer months.
