The Prescott Valley Police Department says they have received reports recently saying scammers are trying to get money from people using social security as the reason. Officials say the call shows up on caller ID as coming from the Prescott Valley Police Department so people think it’s legitimate. Scammers give various stories about money being owed, benefits being cut off and other threatening information. Authorities say one resident with cancer called police in tears saying she was told she was no longer going to receive medical assistance. Every year thousands of people lose money to telephone scams. If someone you don’t know calls for money or personal information, just hang up, especially if the voice on the other end is computer generated. If you haven’t done so already, register your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov. This won’t stop all calls, but it will stop most. If you have any questions, or want to report a call, contact the Prescott Valley Police Department or your local law enforcement agency.
