Prescott Valley Police Is Warning Residents Of Another Phone Scam

Prescott Valley Police are warning of another telephone scam in the area. Officials say a victim reported a call at around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning about an unknown man who was impersonating Prescott Valley Police Detective Matthew Wilson. The victim was told he was going to be charged with a felony and was threatened with a lengthy prison term. The caller told him charges would be dropped if a large lump sum of money, payable by Venmo or gift cards, was purchased at Wal-Mart and submitted to the caller. These calls are becoming more and more common. If anyone asks to receive payment over the phone by a pre-paid, Venmo, or Green Dot cash card, it’s a scam. Also, detectives and officers will not ask for money for dismissal of charges. If you receive one of these calls, call law enforcement immediately.
