The Prescott Valley Police Department has discovered another scam making its rounds in Yavapai County. The department has received many reports of suspects calling residents posing as agents of either the IRS or Social Security Administration. These calls may initially appear to be legitimate. The suspect provides the caller a name as well as an ID number and badge number. The suspect will tell the caller there’s a warrant out for their arrest and will then ask for personal information to “verify” the victim’s identity. Remember: these government agencies will never call you. They correspond through the mail. To protect yourself from scammers, remember scammers can easily fool caller ID. If you’re not sure if the caller was real, look up the phone number. Most importantly, if you are asked for payment by a wire transfer, cash card or gift card, it’s a scam. If you get one of these calls, hang up and call your local police department.
