An accidental shooting has landed a Prescott Valley man in jail on felony charges. Prescott Police were called to the Carl’s Jr. restaurant in the 500-block of Miller Valley Road Sunday at around 5:33 p.m. on a “shots fired” call. When officers arrived they learned a man attempted to pull a handgun from his waistband, when it went off and a bullet hit the man in the leg. He then fled the scene. Officers went to Yavapai Regional Medical Center where the man had checked himself into the emergency room. He has been identified as 27-year-old Michael Stapleton. He told officers he shot himself in the leg in his car on accident and not at the restaurant. Stapleton wouldn’t admit to what his intention was by reaching for a gun when he entered the business. He was arrested at the hospital and as he was searched, dangerous drugs were found in one of his pockets. He was treated and released from the hospital and was booked into the Yavapai County Jail on charges including, attempted armed robbery, reckless handling of a firearm and possession of dangerous drugs.
