A camper was shot late Monday night in a campground near Jerome. Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies were called to an area off Perkinsville Road near the Verde River. A 24-year-old Cottonwood man claimed he was shot in the arm. The victim told deputies he set up a camp site near a bridge overlooking the river at around 10 p.m. A group arrived and set up camp nearby. Members of the group started a large fire, while creating a lot of noise with their dirt bikes and firing off guns. The victim approached the group and asked them to keep the noise down as he was trying to sleep. The group yelled obscenities at him as he walked away. As he was packing up his camp, he heard a gunshot and then realized he was hit in the left arm. The man left the area and sought medical attention at the Jerome Fire Department. Deputies arrived at the campground as the group of five were still making noise. All five were detained. Arrested was 22-year-old Austin Shackleford of Prescott Valley after determining he was the one who fired the weapon. Deputies seized three firearms, including a 9mm handgun used by the suspect. Shackleford was booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including disorderly conduct and assault.
