A Phoenix woman had to be rescued from the Lava Caves Saturday morning north of Flagstaff after falling. Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue crews responded to the caves off Forest Service Road 171 at around 11:55 a.m. on a report of a 43-year-old woman who suffered a possible fractured hip after falling in the caves. Rescue units were able to remove the woman from the caves by a basket at around 2 p.m. She was then transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. Conditions inside the caves were rocky and slippery, which caused her to fall. The Sheriff’s Office reminds visitors to wear proper footwear, warm clothing and have lighting with them when hiking in the caves.
