Nur Wins Two National Titles, NAU Finishes Fourth In The NCAA Indoor Track And Field Championships

NAU sent three long distance runners to the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. All they did was dominate and give NAU its highest finish ever in a national championship meet. It started Friday with the men’s 5,000=meters. Sophomore Abdihamid Nur ran away with the race to win the national title in the event. Nico Young finished third and Drew Bosley finished eight. Nur set a new meet record with the win. NAU earned 17 team points in the race. On Saturday, Nur and Young ran in the men’s 3,000-meters. Nur again dominated winning the race, becoming the first NAU track athlete to win two National Championships in the same meet. NAU head coach Mike Smith said of Nur, “these are the deepest 3K and 5K fields ever assembled and he dominated the best in the nation with his tactics.” He adds, “championships is what we specialize in at NAU and our future got even stronger with those guys fighting these last two days.” NAU finished with 29 points, which is the most points scored in the meet in school history, and it was the first time in school history the Jacks finished on the podium. NAU finished 18 points behind national champion Texas, seven points behind second place North Carolina A&T and two points behind third place Tennessee. The Track And Field Jacks will now head into the outdoor season to try and win more national titles.
