The North Rim of the Grand Canyon has been temporarily closed, and Jacob Lake has been evacuated, due to the Mangum Fire that is burning near Jacob Lake. The fire has burned over 24-thousand acres and is two-percent contained as of Monday. Smoke from the fire is visible from both rims of the canyon. Stage Two fire restrictions are in effect for all areas of Northern Arizona. The restrictions means no campfires are allowed and only propane fueled equipment is allowed. ADOT says Highway 89A is closed in both directions from Fredonia to Cliff Dwellers. Traffic is being diverted through Page and Kanab, Utah on Highway 89. The closure of the North Rim is only temporary and will reopen when park officials deem it safe to do so. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
