Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez Calls For Congressional Inquiry Into Fort Hood Deaths

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez is calling for a Congressional inquiry into the deaths of two members of the tribe at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas. The most recent death was during a training exercise, where Private Carlton Chee collapsed on August 28th. He later died on September 2nd at Carl Darnall Medical Center. Then back on July 3rd, Army Specialist Miguel Yazzie passed away while stationed at Fort Hood. Yazzie served as an Air Defense Enhanced Early Warning System Operator and was previously stationed in South Korea before his death at Fort Hood. Nez and vice president Myron Lizer, have sent several letters to Congressional members calling for a formal investigation into the deaths. In Lizer’s letter, he says “our concern is not only for these two members of the Navajo Nation, but for the many Navajo men and women who are serving in every branch of the military around the world.” Both families say they suspect foul play. Chee’s death was the 28th casualty involving military personnel at Fort Hood this year.
