Navajo Nation Council Approves $557-Million For Second Hardship Assistance To Qualified Members Of The Navajo Nation

The Navajo Nation Council has approved $557-million to send a second hardship assistance check to qualified members of the Navajo Nation. Over 345-thousand people will receive financial compensation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Navajo people who are 18 years and older will receive up to two-thousand dollars per applicant for up to 250-thousand qualifying individuals, and those under 18 will receive $600 per applicant for up to 95-thousand qualifying individuals. The financial assistance can be used to purchase protective equipment, utility, rental and mortgage bills, and educational-related expenses. Pro Tem Speaker Eugenia Charles-Newton has ten days after the session to certify the legislation, then Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez has an additional ten days to approve or veto the bill.
