Navajo Nation Asks President Trump To Commute The Death Sentence For Lezmond Mitchell

The Navajo Nation is asking President Trump to commute the death sentence for the only Native American man currently on death row. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez asks the president to reduce the sentence of Lezmond Mitchell to life in prison. Mitchell was sentenced to death after he was found guilty of killing 63-year-old Alyce Slim and her nine-year-old granddaughter near Sawmill on the Navajo Nation in 2001. At the time the Navajo Nation didn’t agree with pursuing the death penalty for Mitchell. In Nez’s letter to Trump, he said “we strongly hold to our cultural, traditional and religious beliefs that life is sacred.” Mitchell is set to be executed August 26th. The federal government recently resumed executions after a 17-year stoppage.
