Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez has vetoed a resolution that would have permitted Navajo casinos to reopen at 50-percent capacity. The Navajo Nation Council approved legislation earlier this month that would reopen the tribe’s casinos with CDC guidelines. Under Navajo Gaming’s proposal, each casino would have reopened at a minimum 50-percent capacity, while the Navajo Blue Travel Plaza near Flagstaff, would also be open 50-percent, but 24 hours, seven days a week. Nez vetoed the resolution due to the second wave of COVID-19 cases and lockdowns on the reservation. It’s been more than seven months since casinos closed across the reservation, including Twin Arrows Casino Resort east of Flagstaff.
