NAU Set To Demolish Buildings At Route 66 And Milton Road Intersection In Flagstaff

Northern Arizona University is set teardown two connected buildings it owns at Route 66 and Milton Road, after listening to community input about the property. The buildings were once home to the Old Mandarin SuperBuffet, Super Pawn, and before Super Pawn, Mulligan’s sports bar and more. NAU purchased the properties, along with the land that was the long-time home of Granny’s Closet, in 2018 and hasn’t done anything with them since. Officials say the former Super Pawn and restaurant properties will turn into a parking area temporarily, with future plans to be discussed in relation with NAU’s Campus Master Plan. Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett says “the demolition of these properties demonstrates strong community partnership, a commitment to beautifying our community and intentionality in the pursuit of the university’s master planning efforts that make me optimistic for the future.” She adds, “I encourage residents to get involved with NAU’s planning and help shape the Flagstaff campus for the coming decade.” NAU President Jose Luis Cruz Rivera says “I asked the NAU and Flagstaff community to share with me their stories about this location,” Cruz Rivera said. “This brought forward meaningful memories from many individuals: a future husband’s first kiss; family dinner stories that span decades—from the Gables to the Buffet; students hanging out with friends at Mulligan’s; the fire department rescuing a six year old patron who somehow locked themselves in a bathroom; and folks who in times of need were able to monetize their belongings at the SuperPawn Shop with the hope of making it to better days.” The future use of the site will be determined in the Campus Master Plan. NAU has confirmed that in any case, based on how the plan is evolving and prior commitments with the Flagstaff community, the property will not be used for a student housing project. NAU is asking the community to get involved with the Master Plan. There will be an Open House on July 26th from six-to-eight p.m. at the Murdoch Center at 203 East Brannen Avenue in Flagstaff. Those interested can drop in between those hours and ask questions of the officials at the event. The buildings will begin to be demolished the week of August 11th.
