NAU Graduate Sentenced To 18-Months In Prison After Being Found Guilty In Connection With A Shooting Death On A Movie Set

NAU graduate Hannah Gutierrez-Reed received the maximum 18-month prison sentence Monday for her role in the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust” In 2021. The judge addressed Gutierrez-Reed at the sentencing hearing. She said “you were the armorer. The one that stood between a safe weapon and one that could kill someone.” The judge added, “but for you Ms. Hutchins would be alive and her husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother.” Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, and was found responsible for the live round that ended up in the prop gun fired by actor Alec Baldwin, killing Hutchins instantly. Guiterrez-Reed graduated from NAU with a degree in cinematography and film production in 2020.
