NAU Beats Cal Poly 31-29 On Family Weekend

NAU sophomore kicker Colin Robbins hit a 40-yard field goal with 1:49 to play to lead NAU to a 31-29 win over the Cal Poly Mustangs Saturday in the Skydome. Cal Poly had a final drive, but turned it over on downs at the NAU 38 as the Lumberjacks sealed the win. Both teams combined for over 930 yards of total offense, with both quarterbacks throwing for over 350 yards in the game. The game went back-and-forth throughout, with NAU holding a 21-20 lead at halftime. The second play from scrimmage in the second half, R.J. Martinez found wide receiver Hendrix Johnson on a pass down the sideline for a 72-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-20. It stayed that way until later in the fourth quarter when Cal Poly took the lead 29-28 on a field goal with 4:18 to play. The next drive NAU drove down with Robbins, the Fountain Hills High School product, hitting the field goal for what was the game winner. Robbins says he knew he was going to get a chance to kick the winning field goal saying, “I trusted R.J. (Martinez) and I knew the offense would go back down and we were going to get that opportunity.” He adds, “I told my holder and snapper just to be ready for the game winner and I trusted them. It was awesome.” Sophomore R.J. Martinez was 31-of-45 for 358 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Cal Poly quarterback Spencer Brasch, a Higley High School product, was 29-of-51 for 374 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. The Jacks will hit the road for two straight weeks. They will be in Davis, California next Saturday to take on the UC-Davis Aggies. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
