For the first time in 89 years the NAU Lumberjacks beat the Arizona Wildcats in football Saturday night. The Jacks took the lead in the third quarter and held on for a 21-19 win for the first win over the Cats since 1932. True freshman quarterback R.J. Martinez came into the game in the third quarter and went 11-for-16 for 88 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also had 43 yards rushing. Freshman running back Kevin Daniels had 27 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown, including the first down to put the game to bed for NAU. After Daniels got the first down, the Lumberjacks took three straight knees in victory formation for the win. The win was NAU’s first in football over a “Pac” conference team. The victory snapped NAU’s 14 game losing streak against Arizona and increased the Wildcats overall losing streak to 15 games. The Lumberjacks improve to 1-2 on the season and will head to Greeley, Colorado next Sunday to take on the Northern Colorado Bears in the Big Sky opener. Kickoff is at noon, pregame is at 11 a.m. on KAFF Country 93.5/AM 930 in Flagstaff and Fun Oldies 97.9 in Prescott.
