Mother Of A Six-Year-Old Flagstaff Boy Who Died Of Starvation Sentenced To Life In Prison

The mother of a six-year-old Flagstaff boy, who died in March of 2020 after he was locked in a closet for about a month without food, was sentenced Thursday in Coconino County Superior Court. Twenty-six-year-old Elizabeth Archibeque pleaded guilty to first degree murder and child abuse back on May 24th. She received life in prison plus ten years on the child abuse charge. The boy, Deshaun Martinez was found unresponsive at a home in the 31-hundred block of North Monte Vista Drive. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts until medical personnel arrived. They were not able to resuscitate Martinez and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His parents admitted to police that the boy, and his seven-year-old brother, were kept in the bedroom closet for about a month and denied food at times. The brother also appeared to be malnourished. The parents, and their grandmother, admitted the boys were being punished for stealing food by sneaking out of the house while the parents slept. Elizabeth’s husband, 25-year-old Anthony Jose Archibeque-Martinez, and his mother, Ann Martinez are also facing first degree murder and child abuse charges and are being tried separately. However, trial dates have yet to be set.
