Sports betting is no longer illegal in Arizona. Governor Doug Ducey signed new state tribal gaming compacts to allow sports betting anywhere in Arizona. The governor says the deal was over five years in the making. He says expanding gaming means more revenues and called it a “win-win-win” for the state, tribes and Arizona taxpayers. As part of the package, Arizona tribes will get ten licenses and could run sportsbooks at two dozen tribal casinos in the state. Ten licenses will also be awarded to sports franchises in the state, which includes the PGA and NASCAR. Ducey notes gaming keeps thousands of people working, especially in hospitality and tourism. He says the increased revenue will fund education, plus mental health and substance abuse programs. The bill passed the house by a 48-12 vote and the Senate 23-6. Tribal leaders were on hand to witness the signing at the Heard Museum in Phoenix.
