Governor Doug Ducey has issued a statewide Declaration of Emergency with a curfew in effect nightly until 5 a.m. Friday in response to protests that turned violent in the Phoenix area and Tucson over the weekend. Ducey says “this gives law enforcement an additional tool to prevent the lawlessness we’ve seen here and in cities nationwide.” He adds: “Police will be equipped to make arrests of individuals who are planning to riot, loot or cause damage and unrest.” Exemptions to the curfew include first responders, medical personnel, those traveling to and from work, commercial truckers, those seeking medical care or those going to or operating private businesses. Police in Winslow, Williams, Holbrook and Snowflake-Taylor have stated they won’t enforce the curfew because there hasn’t been rioting or looting in those cities. The protests come after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis last Monday.
