FUSD’s Governing Board To Discuss Mask Mandate At Next Meeting, Masks Must Be Worn In School Buildings In The Meantime

The Flagstaff Unified School District’s Governing Board will discuss the possibility of changing the district’s mask mandate at their next meeting on February 22nd. The District says until then, face masks are required to be worn indoors at schools and on school buses. FUSD is aware that some parents are encouraging their students to not abide by the mask mandates on Monday. The district says they are “supportive of each students’ Constitutional rights to assemble peacefully and free expression.” Officials add however, “they are not entitled to impinge on the safety of others or the school’s ability to maintain order.” The District says violation of the mask requirement will result in the student not being allowed in classrooms and, if necessary, directed to an outdoor area to assemble. Parents will be notified and may come pick up their student. Students without a mask will also not be permitted on school buses or school vehicles. They will also be held responsible for missed work and any applicable school tardiness or attendance policies. Officials say staff supervision will be provided to ensure safety, but not to suppress student expression so long as the “expression poses no danger to self or others, other than the refusal to wear a mask.”
