FUSD Governing Board Keeps Mask Mandate In Place Until March 21st, Unless COVID Metrics Lower Before Then

The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board passed a motion Tuesday to continue the mask mandate in schools until March 21st, unless cases and percent positive reach at least moderate levels before then. The motion passed on a 3-2 vote. During the meeting dozens of students, parents, and teachers spoke on the current mask mandate of the school district. Some argued to uphold the mandate while the majority pleaded for its amending to end the mandate immediately. Epidemiologist Matthew Maurer also gave a presentation during the meeting in which he explained how COVID-19 cases in Coconino County have been rapidly decreasing since January 15th. As of last Friday, cases decreased from 654 per 100-thousand to 289 per 100-thousand from the week before, which is still in the high category. In order to get to moderate, cases must be no higher than 49 per 100-thousand. Percent positivity went from 17.1-percent to 11.1-percent last week. To get to moderate, percent positivity must be no higher than 7.9-percent.
