Former Flagstaff High School principal Tony Cullen is trying to enjoy the retired life since leaving his job over the summer. Cullen joined Peter and Dave Wednesday morning on KAFF Country 93.5/AM 930 in his first radio interview since he was removed as principal and then retired after district officials wanted to reassign him. He says since he’s been gone there’s been a void, “I’ve really been lost,” Cullen said. “Not having the kids around, that was my life.” Before his new task was given to him, he retired. Cullen says he filed three complaints at Tuesday night’s Governing Board meeting, because he had some concerns on how his situation was handled. One complaint is against FUSD Superintendent Michael Penca and the other against the Governing Board. He said he was told he was being removed from Flag High because “they didn’t trust my judgement.” The incident regarding his removal came on allegations that a teacher was committing a sexual explicit act during an online class session during remote learning. He was told that there were “multiple complaints” regarding the incident. Cullen says he requested copies of the complaints to talk to the parents and apologize to them. He says after three requests, “I received one complaint.” He adds, “I went to that parent and apologized and they went “what are you talking about? I never filed a complaint.” The teacher in question resigned but was never charged in the incident. Cullen just wants the truth to be known so life can move on because he says, “it’s not about me. It’s about the kids at Flagstaff High School right now.” He wants to make sure this kind of situation doesn’t happen to other principals or staff members that come next. Cullen says he still can’t go to the school, but he lives nearby and hears the announcements and the band practicing and it still bothers him that he’s not there. He now spends time away from Flagstaff on his boat in Florida, enjoying retirement the best he can, but he returns home every couple of months to see family and friends.
